A Secluded Spot Famed as Japan’s Most Beautiful Gorge
The city of Kofu is long and narrow in the North-South direction. The magnificent Chichibu Mountain Range, which straddles six prefectures, covers the northern part of the city, most of which is designated as part of the Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park. Within this stretch of land protected under national control, Shosenkyo Gorge is known as an especially gorgeous scenic spot. It is a part of Mother Nature that represents Japan, being one of only six gorges or ravines in the country designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty.
The gorge extends for around four kilometers with a difference in elevation of 500 meters. Its beauty has moved numerous Japanese who revere nature and been highly acclaimed over the years. Ranked in the top place among gorges in the New 100 Best Sightseeing Spots in Japan, Shosenkyo is Japan’s most beautiful gorge in both name and reality.
The clear stream running gently through the gorge murmurs beside the walking path built along the Arakawa River. Isolated from the hustle and bustle of the city, this calming space will clear away distracting thoughts and soothe your mind and body. Kanazakura Shrine, which sits at the head of the gorge, has long been a spot of mountain worship attracting the adoration of mountain ascetics since its establishment 1,500 year ago.
Along the path, countless oddly shaped rocks sculpted through the erosion caused by wind and water, and cliffs cut out into complex shapes tower above, making you feel the mighty power of nature. The scenery vividly reflects the seasons with the vibrant greens of new buds in the spring and summer, the blaze of autumn leaves contrasting against bare rock in the fall, and a blanket of snow casting a profound atmosphere over the gorge in winter. Shosenkyo’s kaleidoscopic beauty pleases visitors any time of the year.
A variety of highlights and stop-off points are dotted along a hiking path developed for easy walking. The sight of Sengataki Waterfall dropping 30 meters straight down over an immense rock will give a dose of comfort to bodies tried from walking. If you take the Shosenkyo Ropeway, which overlooks the gorge from the sky, to the top of the mountain you can admire the summit of Mt. Fuji appearing to float above the surrounding vicinity. Additionally, Itajiki Gorge, which is dotted with large and small waterfalls, the world’s first art museum of silhouettes, and other sights make this area a place that can be enjoyed all day long.
